how to doodle a moon.
five lines: a crescent, a nightcap and one eye that won't quite close. the shortest doodle lesson we have.
step by step
-

a fat crescent. one line, round on the outside. on the inside edge, cut a wide notch partway down: that's its mouth, mid-yawn.
-

a nightcap. a floppy cap over the top tip, drooping off to the side.
-

a pompom. a little loop at the end of the cap.
-

one sleepy eye. a short flat line for the lid, a dot just under it. still awake, barely. done.
what makes a moon cute
- the notch is the face. a crescent's inside edge is already a profile. cut into it once and it has a mouth.
- one eye is plenty. a crescent seen from the side only has room for one.
- dress it. a cap or a scarf turns a shape into someone.
- fat, not thin. a thick crescent leaves room for a face. a thin one is just a fingernail.
three more moons to try

a moon for the two of you
in wiggle together a moon is a little world you share with one person. you doodle back and forth: one draws, the other colors it in. every day you both draw for it, the moon glows and its streak grows. when a day slips by, it says whose turn it is.
